Our Facility

Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, founded in 1930, is located in historic Fayetteville-the heart of the New River Gorge National Park, a favorite haven for rafting and rock-climbing enthusiasts. At Dodd-Payne-Hess, we feel that serving families is a privilege, and we understand that the loss of a loved one is a very personal experience. Our pledge is to provide compassion, understanding and professionalism that you can rely on—a promise we’ve kept to the families of Fayetteville since the day we opened our doors. Families choosing Dodd-Payne-Hess can be assured of the most pleasant and comfortable surroundings.

The funeral home is housed in a grand three-story building of late-Victorian architecture. The original structure was built in 1888 as a home for Colonel St. Clair, a C&O Railroad attorney, then later sold to J.D. Boone, a coal magnate and direct descendent of the legendary Daniel Boone. At one time, the land now occupied by the funeral home was the site of a Union fort during the Civil War and is now registered with the Fayetteville Historical Society. The funeral home sits on 3.5 acres of land and encompasses 12,846 square feet. A natural stone wall with iron gates graces the front lawns, while a meandering walkway that is lined with hydrangeas leads you to the front drive.

Most of the building’s original charm remains intact, including hand-painted murals on the walls and ceilings of several rooms. On the first floor, you will find spacious comforting rooms for services. The third floor has a casket and vault display as well as an office for you and your family to make arrangements. The chapel seats 125 people, with an overflow area that can be used if extra seating is necessary.

At Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, we believe that every life is unique, and every funeral should be too. We celebrate life. For those thinking about planning their arrangements in advance, we also offer The Simplicity Plan® prearrangement program, an easy way to handle an important family responsibility.
